The way that you are defined as an artist has a direct relationship to the kind of exhibition and funding opportunities available to you, and to your status in terms of taxation. Statistics collected about artists is used by government and the art industry and effects the activities, reports and policies of numerous organisations.


Copyright definition of an Artistic Work

Under the Copyright Act 1968 "artistic work" means:

  • a painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving or photograph, whether the work is of artistic quality or not;
  • a building or a model of a building, whether the building or model is of artistic quality or not; or

  • a work of artistic craftsmanship whether or not mentioned in point one or two; but does not include a circuit layout within the meaning of the Circuit Layouts Act 1989.
