The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has lots of information on its website, including information specifically relating to running a small business and being an artist. You can also download copies of free publications, eg Record Keeping for Small Business, and free accounting software from its site.

The Business Entry Point is a service that provides access to business information and transactions with government. For example, from this website you can register for an ABN and for GST.
