In response to activism by artists and based on research undertaken by NAVA in 2005 and 2006, a new scale of artists fees was devised and published in the 2009 edition of the Code of Practice for the Professional Australian Visual Arts Craft and Design Sector. In considering the changes required to the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy (VACS) funding, NAVA is calling for an increased allocation by federal and state/territory governments of $3 million per year, earmarked for the payment of artists’ fees. NAVA’s research took into account the mix of incomes and expenditures for an artist trying to get his/her work to the public.
NAVA is calling for all government arts funding authorities to require of their clients, the payment of artists fees at least at the minimum levels listed in the Code.

Nava rates
Why is it necessary to purchase the rates booklet before I can find out what the rates of pay for visual artists are ?
This wouldn't happen in the building industry, the catering industry or any other industry I can think of so why in this one?
RE: Payment for Artist Scales of Fees & Wages
Dear Ben
We charge for the 'Artist Scales of Fees & Wages' publication in order to generate income to enable us to conduct further research and produce additional resources in this area and other areas of relevance to the sector. We are a small not for profit organisation and would not not be able to continue to do such research without this support.
The most popular segment of this publication - the Artist Loan Fees - is available as a free pdf download in the Advice section of the website. If you are a member you will also receive a discount on all publications.
I hope that answers your question. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to email us at nava@visualarts.net.au
Best wishes,
Kimberley Hirst
