Subject: Freedom of Expression and Sedition
Dear Parliamentarian, As a visual arts professional, I place great value on my right to freedom of expression. I therefore urge you to take action to make all the changes to the sedition laws, recommended in the report by the Australian Law Reform Commission "Fighting Words Report: A Review of Sedition Laws in Australia", including changes to the Criminal Code and Crimes Act. I support the proposal by the ALRC to remove the word "sedition" and differentiate between a rhetorical, satirical or critical challenge to the authority of the state, and the security risk of the intentional urging of the use of force or violence, which is genuinely intended to take place.
