Artist Statement
Contemporary society is fast-paced. Expediency is key. As we progress from one walk of life to another, from home to work, from one job to the next we are encouraged to do so quickly - to waste as little time as possible. We are often left without opportunity to pause and observe, without time to pay attention to the oft-ignored in-between spaces through which we traverse on a daily basis.
Through the act of photography I engage with the spaces through which I traverse and with the creation of an image, allow myself time to examine that which is overlooked.
These works show my observed reality, the in-between spaces that I encounter on a daily basis. The figure is almost completely absent but traces of human presence abound and it is through this, they hint that these could be the in-between spaces from anyones daily experience. Their reproduction as photographs encourages the viewer to pause and engage in their stillness, to reflect on the elements present and the relationships between.
Through this work I would like to provide my audience with an opportunity to engage with such banal, everyday spaces without the distractions and deadlines of contemporary life. To perhaps encourage in the viewer an increased awareness of the vitality present in many such spaces and of their own unique beauty.
