Bernd was born in Zeven, Germany but has lived most of his life in Australia. He has been a professional artist since 2007 and exhibited (solo and group) in Sydney, Melbourne, regional NSW and the Gold Coast in Queeensland. Internationally, his work has been shown in Montreal, Guangzhou and New York City. He has an honours degree in Computer Science and an Arts degree. He a Director of the Blue Mountains Artists Company. He owns and manages the Event Horizon Gallery, a commerical contemporary art space located in the Blue Mountains in NSW.
Bernd works with a computer to create images. His principal sources of influence are the German Expressionist and American Abstract Expressionist movements of the 20th century which he seeks to reinterpret through the medium of 21st century technology. Although not confined to any particular subject matter, the majority of Bernd's work is focussed upon the realm of psychological possibilites. Here, the emphasis of Bernd's work is the image itself and it's ability to communicate (possibly) narrative meanings through the elements of form, texture and colour. Although very much concerned with structure of the image in terms of its elements and style, Bernd also seeks to enable the viewer to construct their own stories from each piece. Much of his work is abstract to some extent in order to reduce the possibility of the work restricting and dictating the narratives which the viewer may be able to construct from the work. But, he is also conscious of the need to provide some stimulus upon which perceptions and meanings can be hung.
These days, Bernd tends to start each piece from a clean slate and build up the final image from there. He manipulates and reconstructs the image until insights into possible new meanings emerge for him. Then he works towards those meanings. Occasionally, he will set out with a particular end in mind. In such cases, he normally works from source sketches and drawings which are either created digitally or scanned in from paper. Once captured, these sources are then refined through extensive manipulation until the work itself suggests it is completed.
