Artist Statement
My creative practice involves painting, text, photography and also an aspect of performance. These mediums are fundamentally related to the making of an image. The sound/object is the image - in turn the image is necessary to the communication of ideas. For a person to acquire an idea there must be an association with other ideas into a new juxtaposition, in such a manner as to discover a new relationship of which we were previously unaware. Realising this, and understanding that our consciousness is limited to this static field of all ready thought of ideas, I choose my images, whether it be a highly focused oil painting or a meme written in chalk (see my perpetual work on progress –Piece of Nothing http://www.brentley.com/piece_of_nothing.htm) or a poem in an anthology or newspaper, to touch together some of the viewers neurons with associations often overlooked, or that we are ‘trained’ to ignore.
