At a very young age, living in a rural community in the Philippines and caring for my siblings, life was not easy. Being an older sister and living without a mother and father I had to learn to use any materials that were useful for basket weaving and other practical products such as using the sack rice for making bags, weaving pandana hats, sleeping mats and cutting wood for sale. These products were traded in the market or swapped for food. Money earned from sold products was enough for me to buy the basic necessity for my brothers and sisters. Sewing, patchwork and mending old clothes was ordinary for me. I was adopted and was able to continue my schooling, but I was separated from my other siblings. Growing up without a real family is a lonely path and it is this reason that I craved for knowledge, learning new things and my desire to teach people especially the young generations to value their life and learn to respect the Elders.
Every time I look back, practical skills I had learned become more invaluable and assisted my journey to what I am now. Today, my works extend beyond painting sceneries and creating eye-catching objects for display and to wear. I use art as a catalyst in facilitating mentoring and tutoring cross – cultural art workshops and develop and implement community art - based projects to enhance and provide lifelong education for disadvantage community especially those who have limited access to vocational arts education training. The association of these qualities and their evocation envelopes every inch of my artwork and are directly linked to traditional knowledge of weaving that has been passed on by my elders. My knowledge in multi - disciplinary visual arts and project management, means that I can work closely and collaboratively with various communities in particularly with the Ngarrindjeri Community at Camp Coorong in South Australia. My work showcases rhythmic stitches producing an integrated figurative form of images and well blended colours which intertwine with knowledge and story to tell - a deeper story. My artworks illuminate processes that are inherently multidimensional, creative, interactive and dynamic.
