Artist Statement
I work predominantly in the textile medium both wearable and 2D. I am interested in the human body both covering and depicting it These images are from my most recent exhibition Sketches from Rio -embroidered sketches from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am fascinated by the way people make a living on the beaches. Beach goers in Rio dont need to leave the beach, there are not only kiosks on the beach promenade but also walking kiosks who sell snacks, drinks, bikinis, sunglasses, jewelry, fairy floss, beach balls, hammocks and the list goes on and on and on. I have deliberately done simple sketches, so that people will have to take an extra look at the picture and ask themselves, is that a sketch or is there more to the work, just as when we meet a person, are they their job or is there more to them? I studied Textile Art at Newcastle University and at the School for Design and Crafts, Gothenburg University, Sweden. I graduated in 2000. Most recently I was awarded second prize in The Tcklebo Embroidery Academys Golden Needle Embroidery Competition. (see www.broderiakademin.nu ). I have exhibited in Australia and internationally.
