Artist Statement
Kylie Stillman's sculptural practice involves the hand-crafted removal of natural forms from domestic and commercial objects.
Individual pages of books and paper stacks are carved with a scalpel to create a hollowed space reserved for a variety of carefully-rendered bird and plant species, thousands of holes are drilled into Venetian blinds to allow a new view of plant life to stream through a window and large sections are jig-sawed from a tower of ply wood to reveal the elegant form of a potted plants.
Stillman's work presents a multiplicity of readings both critical and personal. Prompting the viewer to entertain the significance of the absent form and fill this space with ideas from the profound to the pragmatic.
Kylie Stillman is represented by Utopia Art Sydney.
