Artist Statement

 

When making art from recycled materials the work retains a memory of the material's original function. The pieces in this body of work are made predominately from Mary Elizabeth's old clothes and those of her family and friends. In their first life they were clothes, utilitarian and practical and their purpose in this first life helps to inform their second life as art. Our clothes are very personal and intimate and in using them to make these sculptures they embody the work with these qualities. Also being made predominately from the clothes of loved ones they are embedded with their memories and shared experiences. Both the physical form and the emotional memories guide and inspire the form of these sculptural pieces. In the past few years several of Mary Elizabeth's family members have passed away. Using their clothes alone and in conjunction with the old clothes of family members still here has been a very special and emotional journey for her. She has made individual pieces and series dedicated to these special people and incorporating their clothes with other family members' symbolises that they are still part of the family and will always be with us. Mary Elizabeth spent her first life being a wife, mother and home educator and now that her children are grown she has embarked on her second life as an artist. This body of work is the current embodiment of this second life which of course builds on and is informed by the first.

My work ‘Philodendron Fancy’s’ will be in the exhibition at Northern Rivers Community Gallery, 44 Cherry St Ballina, open from Wednesday 7th September to Sunday 2nd October 2011.

My other work ‘Critters – The Same Only Different’ will be in the exhibition at The Little Art Shop Gallery, 78b Main Street Alstonville NSW, open from Monday 12th September.

 

 

I have entered a piece, ‘Family Tree – Fig’, in Flying Arts Queensland Regional Art Awards.

I was part of Artist by Artist which was a joint project by the ABC & QLD Arts Council where selected artists were paired up & each made a short documentary on the other. The documentaries are online on ABC Open at:

My solo exhibition, ‘Second Life’, will travel to two galleries in 2012. It will be in Gallery One at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery from 10 July to 2 September and at Dogwood Crossing @ Miles gallery from 12 October to 27 November.
