Artist Statement
I work as a visual artist in a variety of media including sculpture, beaded object & wearable art, photography, design and lighting. My art practice is fuelled by a desire to give momentary meaning to experiences and surroundings. Originally a marine biologist, I rely on the premise that there are few immutable scientific laws; the hypothesis is refined through a process of challenge and review. Most of my artwork starts with a fragment of vivid experience. The hand-made objects evolve from this point, adjusting to new experiences & thoughts. They can be, by turns, visually soothing and startling, contrasting colour, texture and form. At times I create a pattern, only to break it - sometimes abruptly, sometimes gradually – using the working process to suggest new possibilities. From beaded vessels to photographic collages to large installations, most artworks are constructed by hand, allowing for serendipitous and/or intentional imperfection or change. By altering installations and using natural light when possible, changing shadows & light reflections ensure the patterns are never entirely fixed. In the end, the works are intended to invite contemplation, while providing unapologetic visual pleasure.
