Artist Statement
Drawing and painting is my way of responding to the complexity and beauty of the natural world. Discovering natures infinite variety of colours, textures, patterns and forms and observing these intricacies is what stimulates my visual exploration. With this body of work I hope to pay homage to our fragile ecosystems by exploring the shield as a protective device for biodiversity. Each shield represents one of the many threatened flora or fauna species of Australia, which are under threat of extinction due to various reasons, such as large areas of habitat being destroyed or modified by human activity and domestic animals, introduced species and climate change to name a few. Many Australian flora and fauna species are found nowhere else on earth. I hope through this work to encourage an awareness of the plants and animals we are losing at an alarming rate. Attention to preserving the surviving species is crucial if they are to avoid the fate of becoming yet another statistic in the loss of biodiversity.
