Artist Statement
Tina Fiveash is an Australian photomedia artist based in Sydney, who has been exhibiting since the early 1990s. Fascinated with blurring the boundaries between reality and illusion, Tina uses a mix of old and new photo technologies, costume, and constructed sets, to create alternate realities which in many cases, challenge conventional social attitudes, gender stereotypes, and more recently, the perception of depth.
A recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship during 2005 - 2007, Tina undertook extensive research and experimentation into the medium of three-dimensional photography at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, which culminated in a solo show, Camera Mortuaria, exhibited at Kudos Gallery in August 2007.
Tina's photography has been internationally recognized, and and her work is collected by the Whitford Fine Art Gallery in London, and numerous private collections throughout the world. She has exhibited in galleries and festivals throughout Australia, and her work published extensively, including in major contemporary art surveys such as Cross-Currents in Contemporary Australian Art [Allen T., Craftsman House, Australia, 2001], in which her work is featured on the front cover.
In 2001, Tina collaborated with artist, Deborah Kelly, on the award-winning, public art project, Hey Hetero!, which continues to gain attention world wide, most recently appearing at the 2007 Human Rights Arts and Film Festival in Melbourne, and in 2006, in the Glasgow Underground in Scotland, where it was reproduced as billboards for the Glasgay Festival.
