Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship for Emerging Artists

The Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship for Emerging Artists provides assistance towards travel (for educational purposes) and/or tuition costs for young people building a career in the visual arts broadly in the areas of painting, photography or sculpture.

  • Closing date: 5 June
  • Notification: Two months following the closing date
  • Four candidates will be awarded $5,000 each (excluding GST)

Applications must submitted online by the above due date. Printed applications will not be accepted.

About

Applications to travel overseas (preferably for the first time) to undertake formal study, a residency or a planned program with a professional artist or mentor will be considered, as will informal study for a planned research project.

   

Eligibility

  • You must be 30 years of age or under on the application closing date.
  • You must be an ā€œemerging artistā€ i.e. you have practiced as a professional artist continually for less than 5 years but wish to develop your career in your chosen artform.
  • You must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
  • Unsuccessful applicants may reapply in subsequent years. Successful applicants are ineligible for further assistance through this scheme.
   

Exclusions

This Scholarship does not provide assistance towards the production of art work (materials, studio rental, etc).

   

How to apply

  • To apply for this grant you will need to submit an online application.

  • Applications for this Scholarship must be prepared and submitted by the artist, not a third party.   
   

Support Material

As part of your online application you will need to upload the following support material:

  • your Artist CV, no more than 1 x A4 pages in length and saved as a .pdf file*;
  • your birth certificate, saved as a .pdf file*;
  • 10 images supporting your art practice. These should be uploaded in one PowerPoint file, one image per slide. Click here to download a template; 
  • an Image List, listing the titles of your images in the order they appear in the PowerPoint file. This should be saved as a .pdf file*. Click here to view an example Image List;
  • a moving image file (if applicable to your practice), saved as an MP4 file;
  • 2 professional references, saved as .pdf files*;
  • if applicable, a letter of confirmation from the host organisation or mentor, saved as a .pdf file*.  

*How to create a .pdf file from a Word document:

  • In the Word document go to File and click ā€˜Save As’
  • Select the drop down menu next to ā€˜Format’ and click ā€˜PDF’
  • Click the ā€˜Save’ button

The Freedman Foundation is a private charity which provides funding in many areas including this one to assist talented, young Australians involved in the arts to be able to gain valuable insight through overseas travel and/or tuition. It also finances specific medical or scientific research projects, supports Music Council Scholarships and encourages others to be philanthropic.
