Australia Council for the Arts staff strike

Submitted by mediadesk on Wed, 2009-07-01 16:11.

For the second time in a month, staff at the Australia Council went out on strike yesterday to draw attention to their campaign for a pay increase and protection of their existing working conditions.

Staff claim that they now have greatly increased workloads resulting from a 20% staff cut  over the last year. This has been the consequence of the Australia Council’s decision to deal with a Government imposed efficiency dividend by cutting staff rather than diminishing the funding for arts activity.

The arts sector is in sympathy with the Australia Council staff and asks the Arts Minister Peter Garrett to negotiate a return to previous funding levels for the Australia Council to enable it to do its job properly.
