The murder of Nick Waterlow, the gentle giant of Australian art has shocked the arts community. The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) expresses its deepest sympathy to his family and friends and its enormous sadness at the death of a great arts intelligence; a man who nurtured generations of Australian artists and astutely curated national and international exhibitions which showcased their work to great advantage.
“Nick is one of the most admired and loved senior figures in the arts”, said Tamara Winikoff, Executive Director of NAVA today. “Everyone respects his vast knowledge, strategic skill and commitment to artists. I can’t imagine why anyone could possibly want to harm him. He is one of the nicest people I know.”
Nick Waterlow has been director of the Ivan Dougherty Gallery at the College of Fine Arts (CoFA) at the University of NSW, and over a long career has been curator of several Sydney Biennales and an early director of the Australia Council’s Visual Arts and Craft Board.
More recently he has been involved in the planning of a major new gallery as part of CoFA’s expanded facilities, which is on the brink of implementation. “This was Nick’s dream. Now he won’t be there to celebrate its becoming a reality,” said Winikoff. “We know that his death will cut deeply with students and colleagues at CoFA, art practitioners and galleries both across Australia and internationally. His loss is greater than words can say.”
A trust to support Nick's grandchildren has been set up. Go here for more information.
