For the second time in a month, staff at the Australia Council went out on strike yesterday to draw attention to their campaign for a pay increase and protection of their existing working conditions.

Two more artists censored

Artists Cash Brown and Michael Keighery have both recently experienced censorship by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) which runs the Armory Gallery. Two months ago, both artists were commissioned to provide work for an exhibition of the work of 20 former artists-in-residence at the Armory. However, when it came to the point of final approval, SOPA had second thoughts.

Arts Minister Peter Garrett honoured in France

In recognition of his contribution to Australian life and music, Arts Minister Peter Garrett was awarded the prestigious French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on Friday 26th June. This award honours both Mr Garrett’s achievements as a songwriter and performer with the Midnight Oil rock band and his role as a politician.

Save the Victorian College of the Arts

As part of the University of Melbourne’s 2010 Business Plan, several schools at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) have been amalgamated, with some courses being suspended for future student intake. Students are protesting about the changes and the possibility of the remaining VCA schools eventually being dissolved into a more academically-conventional undergraduate Fine Arts degree.
