Sawmillers Reserve is a unique but little-known harbourside park, ideal for showcasing an array of contemporary sculpture against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour. Originally the site of a historic sawmill, it maintains relics from its days as a sawmill, and an old barge.
Sculptures at Sawmillers is the initiative of a small group of McMahons Point residents who have been working together pro bono for more than a year to ensure that the weekend does justice to the venue and to the sculptors who have been chosen to exhibit.
Close to 80 sculptors submitted their work, and 52 have been chosen by the Selection Panel (Sculptor Michael Snape, Gallery Director Jane Watters and Curator Nick Vickers).
Exhibiting artists include established sculptors (such as Anne Ferguson and Paul Selwood), emerging artists and some final year art students. A sculpture prize of $10,000 will be awarded. The event is supported by North Sydney Council and will be opened by the Governor General of Australia, Ms Quentin Bryce AC.
